Tips for the right choice
The resort Puerto Plata, officially named 'San Felipe de Puerto Plata', is located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. It was the first area where tourism began to develop in the 1980s. In addition to Puerto Plata, there are somewhat less known resorts 'Sosúa' and 'Cabarete'. The entire coast is called 'Cost Ambar or amber', because the local mountains hide mines for the extraction of Caribbean amber. Overall, the local coast has about 11 km of larger or smaller beaches. Puerto Plata was founded in 1502, and the name 'Silver Port' was given to the entire bay by Christopher Columbus in 1493, who was reminded of the reflections of silver by the shining ocean. About 70 km from Puerto Plata lies the town 'La Isabela', the place where the first mass was held (January 6, 1494) and where the first town hall, church, and fortress were built. The cable car to 'Pico Isabel de Torres' is certainly worth mentioning, which leads to a peak of 799 m above sea level, where a statue of Jesus Christ stands. Local beaches are sought after by water sports enthusiasts, and because favorable wind conditions prevail here, international windsurfing competitions are held every year. Rum lovers will appreciate a visit to the distillery producing Brugal rum.
